Two Ways to Emboss and Color for Stunning Handmade Cards

Today’s post is all about using embossing folders to create beautiful dimension and texture on your handmade cards. We’ll also explore two different ways to add color to embossed cardstock, giving you some fresh ideas for your next project!

Embossing for Added Dimension

The card we’re creating features a background embossed with the Distressed Tile 3D embossing folder from Stampin’ Up!  For a subtle pop of color, I first used a blending brush to add a light layer Melon Mambo ink to the cardstock (bottom) before running it through the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine. This technique creates a soft, almost monochromatic look that really highlights the embossed texture.

For the opposite corner of the card (top left), I decided to try a different approach. Here, I used the blending brush directly onto the embossed raised areas after the cardstock had been run through the die-cutting machine. This method deposits more color saturation, creating a bolder contrast between the raised and recessed areas of the design.

Here’s the same design in Pool Party!

Once both embossed and colored elements were complete, I used the Layering Leaves stamp set and coordinating Bough punch from Stampin’ Up! to create delicate leafy embellishments. These were then layered and adhered to the card front for a touch of nature-inspired elegance.

I hope this blog post has inspired you to try out some new techniques for coloring embossed cardstock! Experimenting with different color combinations and embossing folders allows you to create endless possibilities for your handmade cards. All of the supplies used can be found below.

So why not set aside an afternoon to get crafty and create a batch of cards for your loved ones? It’s a lovely way to connect and brighten someone’s day. Happy Stamping!
